In 2004, the band Simple Plan came out with the song "Crazy" that describes society. It illustrates how ridiculous people are acting. I thought it was interesting because even though this came out 6 years ago, most of what the song is about still applies to issues society has today.

Simple Plan wants to know what is wrong with society, why do we do the things we do? Why do girls do practically anything such as diet pills and surgery to be on TV? Why is money our first priority in life? How is is that people can be so selfish and privileged while kids who don't have any opportunities are starving in the world? Their powerful lyrics really shine upon how "crazy" society has become.

I think that the lyrics of the song are powerful and address many of our society's problems. Basically, our society's values are warped and "crazy". We value money, and beauty more than anything else, and it just doesn't make sense. We end up feeling worse about ourselves and unhappy that we can't be beautiful or rich. The song does a great job of showing how ridiculous and negative our values really are.

ReplyDeleteThis song did a nice job with showing what our society values. We will do just about anything to reach our "goal". That goal is to become the accepted standard that is put fourth by our society. The lyrics, "I guess we're all just too damn busy, And money's our first priority. It doesn't make sense to me", really caught my attention. We don't even care about our own well-being, which is shown in the song with society's use of products like diet pills just to achieve immediate satisfaction. All we care about is getting ahead(like becoming famous), but we never stop to think about where we are actually going or how we are getting there.
ReplyDeleteI think that the song did a nice job in evaluating our society. Our society today is essentially crazy. Our sense our priorities is warped. Like kate stated we value outer beauty more than inner beauty. We settle for false virtual communities established on facebook over taking the time and having a real life conversation with someone. The song states that we need to open our eyes and I agree. We need to wake up and reevalute our lives and our sanity.
ReplyDeleteThis song definitely fits right into our discussions about the current distortion of reality. Our society has become crazy for materialistic items rather than depth. People today ignore things that are basically right in front of them because they think that these things do not pertain to them. What our developed minds don't understand is that we are a part of everything that goes on in the world, and that we can all do something to reverse all the negativity. If we are able to achieve this much in destroying our society, think about how much we can change in it. If only we could just open our eyes.
ReplyDelete"Is everybody going crazy" and I think the answer is yes. The song was a rude awakening ("if you open your eyes") and a an evaluation of what society has become (last few words; "something is wrong")
ReplyDeleteIt looks as if the band members may be able to identify with the song and the song provides a therapeutic release of anger towards the way so many people (girls especially) have believed lies and gave into who they're supposed to be rather than who they are.
This song is soooooo accurate. I've recently read Kimmy's/Tati's blogs and this further develops their blogs. Women are being objectified yet most of them don't care--they want to be on TV and they want to be models and famous. They don't care that their looks are contributing to their fame. It's sickening. Crazy is not a strong enough word for our society. Women are going to such extreme measures to try and please. Diet pills, surgery, etc. and technology in it of itself is just making women want to do it so much more. If there weren't ad's in magazines with "beautiful" women, (in quotes because, in fact, these women do not look like the pictures--we can, yet again, thank technology for these differences) or movies with these "beautiful" (make-up coated) women, no women would want to go to such extreme measures. I think it's interesting that it's a boy band singing this song as well. They're the people who should be attracted to these women yet they're repulsed. That, to me, is refreshing and nice. This band is using it's success to try and send the message that there is something seriously wrong with society and this problem has to be addressed sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteThis song does in fact accurately describe our nation's crazy obsessions and values. Like everyone is saying here, our values or the things we value most, have been warped. The song stresses women's obsessions with beauty and beautification. It also emphasizes how Americans see money and wealth, while there are so many others who are in need. But most importantly, the most significant point to this song is that people DO care that our country is becoming "crazy" and that we have to do something about it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw that you had chosen this song I have to admit I grinned - talk about revisiting an old friend. Then it occured to me that even though I had known the song since we were children the meaning of the words kept changing for me in small ways while the deeper meaning stayed true - society has been warped. However, as most people have already addressed the major meaning, I would like to talk about the fact that as we grew up the lyrics would slowly change for me. It started off when I heard the song for the first time as almost a warning bell making me aware of the issues. Then it slowly morphed from being educational into support for my own view points. Now, looking at it once more, it actually provokes a question; how often do we take music lyrics seriously? If there was a song educating me as to the flaws inherit in our system of living making it so we know what we have created why havent we changed? Do we enjoy being stuck in a downward spiral? Or are we so fixated on the present that we cant stop to save our future?
